Learning the history of watches starts with being aware with some of its terms. Horology is a term that is associated with watches. In watch history, horology has actually two meanings: the first is that it is the science or the study of properly measuring the time. Likewise, horology is defined as that art of creating watches, clocks, and other devices that tells about time.

Since the time man first appeared on the surface of the earth, great efforts had been made to easily measure time. Methods like keeping track of the movement of the sun from the sky, the markings of candles during intervals, the oil lamps that had marked reservoirs, and sandglasses, were done just to properly measure the time. Knotted cords as well as metal mazes and small stones that were filled with the scent of incense then burned on certain rates were the ones made use in the Orients. These are some of the many ways time were measured during the years that watches were of no existence just yet.

The history of the watch then tells us the quartz crystal timepieces and clocks were all dependent on the size, the shape as well as the temperature of the crystal for it to set a specific frequency. Accordingly, the quartz watches and clocks have remained very popular though during that time, these watch were not that accurate in giving the right time. But hen again, a lot of people have continued to buy them, hoping to monitor time at an easier method. The history of watches then takes us to the very first manufactured watches. These watches do not have a minute hand and they were designed with a natural movement. Accordingly, these watches are wounded once in twelve hours. Because during those times watches were not that accurate in measuring time, they are more worn primarily for adornment rather than functionality. Likewise, these timepieces worked well with weights. However, they are really not that practical, as far as portability is concerned.

Time measurements have always been a practical goal for men even from the start. Watches were designed to help men understand how to get to where they are with these timepieces.

History of watches is indeed very interesting. During the early 1600’s, timepieces were already in existence but their main problem concerned about the driving powers of watches, in the forms of balanced weights, making these watches very difficult to manage, as they are relatively heavy. In 1575, English and Swiss products began appearing in public, with watches that are of the top quality during that time. Over the years, more and more designs and features were created to cater to everybody who can benefit having these timepieces. It was not until the late 50’s where watches became battery operated, and finally in the 70’s where they were finally electronically engineered.

Learning more about the wrist watch history should always be fun and at the same time educational. After all, you are learning some facts about your wide collection of watches, right?
