When the designs of watches have gone tremendously ostentatious as one of the ways of attracting the avid lovers of these jewelry pieces, all watchmakers had jumped into the bandwagon. Well except for one whose distinct and unique design has always been of the minimalist persuasion--- Movado.
Not because it has run out of ideas as to how it should present its line of watches to the whole world but more so in sticking to its philosophy in making the watches that stand out when it comes to aesthetic and functionality. True enough, Movado has earned the respect and acclaim of some of the world’s reputed watchmakers and aficionados.
It has always been said that “the art of Movado is the art of time” which is has proven for so many decades without faltering. The company started its humble beginnings way back in 1881 when a 19-yearl old investor Achille Ditesheim decided to hire six skillful watchmakers to make their first creation. The company first started in one of the villages of Switzerland, the La Chaux-de-Fonds. Since then there was no turning back for Movado watches. It is now the most looked up to company in the timepieces industry because their the Movado watches are truly world-class. It has in fact produced inventions that have earned more than a hundred patents. It likewise reaped international recognitions in the field of artistry of designs and inventive developments in watchmaking technology that have already reached to 200 hundreds awards and citations.
True to its name, Movado, taken from Esperanto’s international language, actually means “always in motion,” has relentlessly made every move to make each Movado watch truly special--- work of art and science of the highest standards. This milestone move of Movado has become the epitome of other watchmaking companies that are making the push to become one of the world’s best.
In 1912, Movado successfully tested the waters when it introduced its Polyplan designs that are patterned that of the contours of a wrist, which fits just perfectly well. This revolutionary design had did not only catapult Movado to even greater heights as far as watchmaking is concerned but also change the landscape of the standards of making high-premium watches.
Thirteen years later, another one of its finest creations, the Movado Pocket Watch is elegantly shaped like that of a cushion which made it all the more visually pleasing and functionally astounding. It naturally became the crowd’s favorite during the “Exposition des Arts Decoratifs” held in Paris. The peacock color inspired watch is definitely a jewel in its own, no wonder it gained outright popularity among the many lovers of high-quality watches.
The following year, as if introducing the Movado Pocket were not enough to make its presence felt, it once again launched into full stardom, like Hollywood would have done it with their most bankable artist, the Ermeto. This uniquely designed pillow-shaped watch is one of the most playful that Movado has ever had, which also remarkably came in brightly colored and glossy metal.
Twenty years thereafter, Movado has incessantly made waves in the chronograph industry when it launched its trailblazing design in Calendomatic. Never before the world had seen a watch that presents the date, month, and year all at the same time since the model was formally introduced in the market. This is perhaps one of the milestones since the dawn of chronography.
But what made Movado truly prominent is its daring and groundbreaking act of introducing the single-dot watch way back in 1947, which is now popularly referred to as the Movado Museum Watch was conceptualized by one of the greatest artist it has collaborated with, Nathan George Horwitt, who got his inspiration from the sun dial. Rightly so, the single-dot placed in the 12 o’ clock mark depicted the sun at high noon.
Fifty years after, Movado is still the most adored watch in the industry. Nothing can truly compare to the feat that this company has achieved so far. Simply put, it is always in motion, as the name suggests.
