Waltham Watch Company History
The year was 1850, when three young men from Roxbury, Massachusetts, David Davis, Aaron Lufkin Dennison, and Edward Howard created a company the manufactures a fully interchangeable and precise movement parts that would soon become the famous American Waltham Watch Company. The trio has not hit the buying market that easily. They have a number of failed trials but this did not stop them from achieving what they have always longed for. Along with the passion and their ingenuity, the trio has incredibly patented and perfected their machines for watch making. Over the years, they have created and manufacture the American System of Watch Manufacturing.
By 1851, just about a year after they have successfully hit the market, Waltham Watches changed their name to American Horolage Company. The company then started its production from the new factory. A year after, the very first watches were successfully manufactured. The first seventeen of them were marked “The Warren Mfg Co”, and exclusively distributed among the top corporate officials of the company. Numbers eighteen to one hundred were then named the “Warren Boston” while the eight hundred more that followed name “Samuel Curtis”. There are some also who were sold for forty dollars, and they were called “Fellows and Schell”.
In September of 1853, Waltham watches changed its name to the “Boston Watch Company”. A more modern company was then built in Massachusetts, particularly in Waltham, which continuously grew up to the present size. In October of 1854, the Waltham Company then transferred into a new location and the company has incredibly produced more and more watches, named and marked “P.S. Bartlett”, “Dennison, Howard, & Davis”, and “C.T. Parker”. Like any ordinary company, Waltham Watches also suffered financial crises, making one of its founder, Edward Howard, leaving the company before forming a one of his own.
During the bankruptcy, the company of Waltham Watches was then auctioned to Royal E. Robbins and was later named “Appleton Tracy & Co.: in May of 1857. With the new name, the company then produced the Waltham Model 1857, and they were numbered 5,001 to 14,000. The “C.T. Parker” was then introduced as the 1857 model, producing 399 units. It was also during this time were chronometers were designed, five hundred ninety eight of them. In January 1853, the PS Barlett watches were then introduced.
Waltham watches have serial numbers. It is said that every movements of their watches were engraved with its distinct serial numbers that are very useful in estimating the date the watch was produced.
In 1957, the American Waltham Watch Company has stopped its business but it had a subordinate in Switzerland in the year 1954, the Waltham International SA. This is the company the produces Swiss made Waltham luxury watches. The company is a member actually of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH.
